I love being an art teacher! I worked at Whispering Palms, a small private school on the island of Saipan, for three years. Being able to work with creative young minds was one of the coolest jobs I've ever had. Since moving to Hawaii I’ve spent more time on making and selling my art, but I’ve missed teaching, and I’m excited for the opportunity to teach small classes again.
I truly believe that anyone can be an artist. As a teacher my main goal for the kids is to help them develop confidence in creating art. I love helping each individual discover their strengths and develop their style. I try to help the kids to understand that they are individuals with unique talents, and I teach that they shouldn’t compare themselves to their classmates, me, or other artists. Sometimes kids make a “mistake” on their work. Instead of having them start over, one of my class rules is “Work with your mistakes!” Sometimes mistakes are the path to amazing discoveries. It can be hard, but being able to step back and figure out how to work with an accident helps the kids broaden their minds and change the way they look at things. I do my best to make classes fun and educational. It’s important to me that kids have the freedom to express themselves with each project. There is a blog that I started with the intention of updating it with every project. Unfortunately life got a bit crazy for me and my family and I wasn’t able to keep it up to date. That being said, if you would like to see a few of the projects I did with my students, please click on the top left corner. |
